Surrey, BC – The Canada Cup is thrilled to learn the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed softball as part of the sports programme for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles – meaning the world’s best will once again have the opportunity to compete on the world’s biggest stage.
For 31 years the Canada Cup Organizing Committee has worked to support the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and Softball Canada in its efforts to make softball a sport that is featured at every Olympics moving forward.
“Our national women’s team has played a starring role in the annual Canada Cup International Softball Championship at Softball City. This site is also where they earned their most recent Olympic berth,” said Canada Cup Board Chair Greg Timm. “We are excited for Canada and other Olympic hopefuls to continue to visit Surrey for the biggest and best international fastpitch tournament in Canada every year in the lead up to 2028.”
Softball has been on and off the Olympic program for the last few decades. It made its debut in Atlanta in 1996 and remained on the program through Beijing in 2008. After being excluded from both London in 2012 and Rio in 2016, it made its triumphant return at Tokyo 2020, where Canada memorably won the bronze medal – the first Olympic medal Canada had earned in the sport.
