HIGHLY ANTICIPATED OLYMPIC VOTE ON SOFTBALL/BASEBALL TO FOLLOW 2016 WOMEN’S WORLD SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT IN SURREY

Vancouver – Less than a week after the conclusion of the 2016 Women’s World Softball Championships, happening in Surrey, British Columbia July 15-24, 2016, the International Olympic Committee will convene to vote to reinstate softball and baseball into the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. The highly anticipated vote, which many believe will return the iconic sports back to the Games, comes after what will have been a twelve-year hiatus from sports biggest championship.

Softball was introduced as an Olympic sport for women at the 1996 Olympics. In 2008, in a surprise decision, softball and its sister sport of baseball, were removed from the Games. The lobby to reinstate began immediately, and the pending vote is seen by many in the sport as a righting of a significant wrong.

The competition at this year’s Surrey 2016 World Championships is a testament to the sports’ global appeal, with teams participating from 31 nations including Canada, the USA, Great Britain, Australia, Israel, Peru, Uganda, Cuba and Serbia, among others.

The Women’s World Championship, Surrey 2016, will welcome the world’s most prestigious softball athletes to Surrey, BC, Canada on July 15-24, 2016. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit http://www.surrey2016.com. Find us on Twitter.com/Surrey2016 or Facebook.com/Surrey2016
